The British Cleaning Council is the voice of the UK cleaning industry. It was established in 1982 to coordinate the affairs of the industry and to be responsible at home and abroad on industry matters.
The council provides a forum for members to meet and work together to raise the profile of the industry and help it gain the credibility it deserves. It also promotes and encourages improvements in health, hygiene and general cleanliness standards.
The BCC has 18 members, which cover every facet of the multi-million pound UK cleaning industry.
Along with Quartz Publishing & Exhibitions, the BCC co-owns the world-renowned Cleaning Show. This is a regular and well-regarded exhibition held at the NEC Birmingham every two years, and is now a highlight of the international cleaning industry calendar.
The aim is to provide a showcase that both reflects and caters for the UK industry`s needs, with BCC ploughing profits back into the industry, helping us pursue our policy of furthering the educational, training and promotional needs of its member bodies.
The British Cleaning Council also organises the "Clean Britain Awards" scheme, replacing "Britain`s Cleanest City" competition. The finale coincides with The Cleaning Show, last taking place at the Birmingham NEC on 13th March 2007.

MARK WOODHEAD - DEPUTY CHAIRMAN

Mark Woodhead, Sales Director of Selden Research was elected to the role of Deputy Chairman on 21st June 2007. Mark has 25 years experience in the cleaning industry; he represents the CHSA on the BCC having been Chairman of that association in 2003 and 2004. He also represents the interests of BCC and its member associations on the board of BCCE Ltd, the company responsible for the biennial Cleaning Show.
Founded in 1969 and based in Buxton Derbyshire, Mark runs Selden Research along with his brothers David and Peter. The family business was the first professional cleaning chemical manufacturer to gain the ultimate environmental manufacturing standard IPPC which builds upon the foundations of ISO14001. Today Selden produces 40,000 tonnes of product annually, employing 130 staff.
Married with 2 teenage daughters, Mark fights his advancing years away on the lacrosse field; a glutton for punishment - in 2004 he ran the London Marathon raising money for the NSPCC.

STEVE TO DELIVER A TOUCH OF QUALITY

On 21st June 2007, Steve Wright, Chief Executive of Quality Assured Services (QAS) Ltd, became Chairman of the British Cleaning Council. Originally from Edmonton, Steve’s company’s headquarters are in Ware, Hertfordshire. He started the business in 1990 and employs around 500 staff including his son Jamie who is the Business Development Director and his daughter Emma who heads up the payroll department.
He has 30 + years’ experience in cleaning and facilities management. His career began at the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) where he was one of the Corporation’s youngest facilities managers.
Steve is very active in the industry, having recently been Master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners and Chairman of the Building Cleanability Awards. “I have entered at a very exciting time - the year in which we have celebrated our 25th anniversary at the House of Commons, no less! I hope to build on BCC’s successes to date and expand our business portfolio, not forgetting our desire to develop the important links we have made, including those in the Government, to name a few.”

Honorary Post Is Filled For Only Second Time Since Council's Establishment
The British Cleaning Council, the co-ordinating body for the UK cleaning industry, has announced the appointment of a new President. The honorary post, which has no fixed term, has been bestowed on Trevor Iles, a former BCC chairman, in recognition of his considerable and lengthy service to the Council and to the UK cleaning industry as a whole. He takes up the job with immediate effect.
This is only the second time in its 25-year history that the British Cleaning Council, whose 16 member bodies embrace virtually every aspect of the industry, has awarded the honour; the last person to hold the post of BCC President was Lord Parry of Neyland, who relinquished the position more than a decade ago.
Trevor, who began serving on the British Cleaning Council in the early 1990's representing the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers' Association, completed his two-year term of office as BCC chairman in 1996. Since that time, he has continued to take an active interest in the affairs of the Council. Within the last few years, he has chaired a sub-committee tasked with re-formulating and updating the Memorandum of Articles and Association of the BCC, as well as considering the scope and future development of the Council.
He has also represented the BCC on the Board of BCCE Limited, the jointly-owned company which runs the Cleaning Show, the cleaning industry's highly successful biennial exhibition, and has been a member of the judging panel for the BCC's biennial "Britain's Cleanest City" award scheme, which aims to raise standards of cleanliness in Britain's cities and recognise the efforts of those cities which have implemented successful policies in this direction.
A former chairman of the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers' Association, Trevor is now its Vice-President. He is, in addition, a member of the British Institute of Cleaning Science, as well as of the Chartered Institute of Waste Management, and can look back on a career in the industry extending nearly 40 years.
A Continuous Presence
When not traversing the length and breadth of the country in the service of one or another of the industry's governing bodies, Yorkshireman Trevor is chairman and managing director of the Bradford-based company which he founded in 1972 and which continues to bear his name. Trevor Iles Limited was originally set up to manufacture trade waste containers, sackholders, and more recently, litter bins, but is now involved, with the aid of Trevor's two sons who have followed him into the business, not just in manufacturing, but also in service, engineering support and distribution, all within the broad scope of the cleaning industry. He is also a director (and a former chairman) of Nationwide Hygiene Supplies, a national distribution organisation for hygiene and cleaning products; as such, he remains in regular contact with all the major manufacturers of cleaning machines, chemicals and other equipment, as well as understanding the needs of contract cleaners and other service providers.
"The idea behind having a president as well as a chairman," says the BCC's General Secretary, John Stinton, "is principally to ensure that while the latter changes every two years (with a further year on Council ex officio), the former is available to provide some continuity and maintain a constant, knowledgeable and fully-conversant presence, whenever required, in support of the Council's deliberations.
"For this reason," he added, "BCC members are delighted to see in the role an all-rounder who has such a unique breadth of experience in, and connections with, so many of the differing interests within the cleaning business. Trevor, who is such a well-known and well-respected figure throughout the industry, is the perfect choice."
Trevor himself is looking forward to his new role with enthusiasm. "I feel greatly honoured that the BCC has entrusted me with this new role. Without wishing to interfere in any way with its day-to-day running, I am happy to do whatever I can, whenever I am called upon, to further the work of the British Cleaning Council, which today, more than ever, has such an important part to play in advancing the interests of the UK cleaning industry," he said.
