BCC Backing Cleaner Streets

The British Cleaning Council (BCC) is pleased by Keep Britain Tidy's news that litter levels have fallen to a five year low. According to the most recent Local Environmental Survey of England (LEQSE), released last week, councils are getting the thumbs-up for picking up litter at the right time and the threat of a hefty fine is encouraging more people to use the bin.

However, the bad news is that dirt levels, i.e. grit and soil, have risen meaning that streets, whether litter free or not, are still looking dirty. As a result, Keep Britain Tidy is encouraging members of the public to take pride in their streets by giving them a brush and a clean.

Judith West, Chairman of the BCC said: "I would have to agree that restoring civic pride in our country is a must. As organisers of the Clean Britain Awards we would like to see more responsibility of those living and working in our cities, towns and districts.

"We would also like to see all councils including steam cleaning as part of their cleansing regime. While many of them are pulling out all the stops to keep the streets in tip-top shape, going the extra mile for that extra sparkling touch can make all the difference to a street's appearance."
