Newquay is one of the latest UK locations to embrace the concept of open air toilets to curb city centre urination. The move follows the footsteps of other cities like Westminster and Manchester by erecting French-style pissoirs to cater for late night weekend revellers.
The toilets rise up from the ground at night-time in order to provide public conveniences. Judith West, Chairman of BCC said: "This is a step in the right direction as public toilet provision has become a huge problem in the UK as more and more councils have been shutting down their facilities. Our member the British Toilet Association (BTA) campaigns tirelessly on this matter in order to get public loo provision high on the government`s agenda".
The loos have been installed in this busy Cornwall tourist spot following complaints from local residents about night-time revellers using the streets as a public convenience.
The BTA and ENCAMS held a conference in July of this year on the future of public toilet provision. BTA have assisted ODPM - the government department formerly known as the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister - with information on public toilet provision to go into their Cleaner Safer Greener: How to Manage Town centres guide.
