The British Cleaning Council (BCC) has welcomed Boy George`s positive comments about his time spent cleaning the streets of New York.
The popstar turned club DJ was sentenced to five days of community service after admitting falsely reporting a burglary at his flat.
The singer`s stint as street sweeper got off to a bad start when he was heckled by a media pack. But Boy George persevered and despite the unwanted press attention, has described the experience as hard work, but enjoyable and a real laugh.
Judith West, Chairman of BCC, said: "Cleaning has become a professional, skilled occupation where many have gone on to set up their own successful businesses. We are starting to witness a climate of change with conditions for cleaners and street sweepers improving.
"Unfortunately people`s perception of the cleaning profession is taking a while to catch up. Positive comments such as those made by Boy George are important to breakdown the stigma."
